Flight of the Conchords

I’ve always been a fan of HBO’s original programming. I watched the first four seasons of the Sopranos, the first two seasons of Six Feet Under, a handful of Curb Your Enthusiasm episodes and the odd showings of Tenacious D and Deadwood. Hell, I even remember watching Fraggle Rock and 1st & Ten back in the 80’s. And, just to make this paragraph that much longer, I’m cautiously hoping that if they ever do end up producing a Preacher series on the channel that it will turn out as well as most of their other programming.

With all of that being said, I am extremely excited for this new series to begin next Sunday:

Flight of the Conchords

Flight of the Conchords

The series follows New Zealand’s fourth most popular digi-folk parody group as they try to make a successful run of it in America. If the rest of the series is as funny and odd as the pilot episode (click the picture to watch it), this will be one that I will definitely be buying the box set for.

While I always liked the idea of Tenacious D and I used to think Jack Black was funny when he was on Mr. Show, the schtick got old pretty quickly. Now I see Jack Black and I cringe because he’s become a caricature of himself (see also: Jim Carrey). But the Conchords are much more subtle and much more self-deprecating.

Besides, I’ve always been a big fan of musical parody (If you haven’t seen the Stephen Lynch at the El Rey DVD, you’re seriously missing out) and these guys do it well without being overly silly. And they’re actually pretty gifted musically.

Check out a few more of their songs here, here and here.
